Our Staff and Board of Directors
Noba Anderson, Executive DirectorHaving grown up on Cortes Island, Noba has returned to this community as there is no other place she would rather be. She has worked with community non-profits in BC, Asia, Central and South America. Noba has a BA in environmental studies and comparative development from Trent University. Inspired by the community forest efforts on Cortes, she focused her thesis on BC forest tenure issues, community forestry, and specifically our Cortes community forest journey. Since then, she worked for a year with Indonesia’s leading community forest organisation, lived in Harrop-Procter – BC’s only operational community forest guided by a Silva ecosystem-based plan – and was the Community Program Advisor at the Dogwood Initiative. In that role, she traveled BC learning from many community forest ventures and published the leading report ‘Connecting Lands and People: Community Forests in British Columbia.’ Noba believes in the ability of people to make deeply meaningful change. She has returned to Cortes with the goal of making a community forest an operational reality.

He now makes his living designing, building and woodworking with local species. He also enjoys kayaking, sailing and boat-building. He volunteered for several years in helping CES and the Silva Forest Foundation create improved ecosystem-based mapping for the Cortes Island community and as a planning tool for the potential Community Forest.
Fred Savage, DirectorFred and his family moved to Cortes Island full-time in the summer of 2004. Fred has been a woodworker for about 20 years, building homes as well as working with re-claimed, eastern, and 19th century wood. Much of his building experience is in designing and building furniture, and he hopes to continue this, incorporating West Coast wood into his designs. Fred's interests include the environmental and historical aspects of the forests on Cortes. Currently, Fred and his family are building a small home on the island. Fred has a strong vision of helping to create a woodworking co-op on the island and is also hoping to use his many skills to assist CES in any way he can.
